Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad: Doha is a city with an important history and it is a contemporary cultural center

His Excellency Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, Chairman of Qatar Olympic Committee, said that the State of Qatar’s hosting of the event of Doha, the capital of Islamic culture, proves Doha’s position as a city with an important history and as a contemporary cultural center that produces knowledge and attracts the most important minds and ideas.

His Excellency added in a tweet on his official account saying: “under the patronage of His Highness the Amir of the country, I announce the launch of the activities of Doha, Capital of Culture in the Islamic world. This decision indicates the position of Doha as a city with an important history in the region and as a contemporary cultural center that produces knowledge and attracts the most important minds, ideas, academic and research institutions in the world today.”

The event of Doha, Capital of Culture in the Islamic World in 2021, which was launched yesterday,  is hosted by the State of Qatar and lasts for the whole year under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, in cooperation with the Islamic World Organization for Education, Science and Culture “ISESCO”, the Qatar National Committee for Education and Culture and science together with the strategic partners, which are: the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, Qatar Museums, Katara Cultural Village Qatar, and many of the participating entities in the state, under the auspices of the Social and Sport Contribution Fund, and Qatar Charity (as golden patrons).

The hosting program includes the preparation of more than 70 diverse events during the current year. The program aims to reflect the perceptions of the country and the hosting as well. It also carries many challenges due to the current health conditions.

Doha, Capital of Culture in the Islamic World 2021, seeks not only to promote eternal Islamic values, especially those based on science and human dignity, but also to promote Islamic cultural heritage in an interconnected world. In addition to that, this event aims to encourage creativity and innovation as civilized values ​​that enrich Islamic civilization, and to inspire new generations in the Islamic world to enrich the international cultural scene through an effective and active role. Moreover, the hosting of this events is meant to focus on cultural diversity as an added value for Islamic countries and Islamic culture in general, and it is an occasion to introduce the cultural experience of the State of Qatar and its efforts to promote Islamic culture.
