Museum of Islamic Art has opened an application for the program “Discover 2”, which is an annual initiative. This year 8 Qatari artists will join MIA staff on a 7-day trip to Istanbul, Turkey, including visits to historical monuments and workshops on traditional Turkish art.
This trip comes in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture and Sports, and is also part of the activities of Doha Capital of Culture in the Islamic World 2021.
The culturally immersive trip is a source of inspiration for the participating artists, who will work to produce artworks that contribute to promoting the flourishing cultural scene in Qatar.
Salem Abdullah Al-Aswad, Deputy Director of the Museum of Islamic Art said: “Through this annual educational initiative, the Museum of Islamic Art provides an opportunity for distinguished Qatari artists to interact with like-minded creators, to learn about the unique and distinctive arts and the culture of different countries”.
He added that this trip will include visits to sites of historical importance such as Hagia Sophia Mosque, Blue Mosque, Rustem Pasha Mosque, Yavuz Selim Mosque, Mahramah Sultan Mosque, Yeni Walde Mosque, and Topkapi Palace. Each day of the trip will include a workshop to examine the traditional Islamic arts practiced in Turkey such as Iznik ceramics, Ebro art, gilding and glass painting.
The Deputy Director of the Museum of Islamic Art explained that after the trip, participants will be asked to produce 4 to 5 artworks inspired by their visit, which will be displayed in an exhibition at the Ministry of Culture and Sports in December 2021.
In addition, the artists are scheduled to participate in a panel discussion open to the public on The trip and the experiences gained during it.
The door for applications to participate in the trip is open to Qatari nationals aged 18 years and over, practicing the arts, who must send five samples of their artwork, CV, passport copy, and copy of the certificate of vaccination against Covid-19.
